Extramedullary Hematopoiesis
(1)Compensatory mechanism for bone marrow dysfunction -> proliferation of hematopoietic cells
(2)Cause: Bone marrow replacement disease, Hemolytic anemia
(3)Site of hematopoiesis
-Liver / spleen : hepatosplenomegaly
-Thoracic manifestation; paravertebral/posterior mediatinal soft tissue mass, mass adjacent to rib
-Renal involvement; diffuse enlargement, perirenal hypoattenuating mass
-Less common site; retroperitoneum, skin, CNS
(4)Paravertebral mass
-Herniation of vertebral or rib marrow through small cortical defect
-Well defined, lobulated contour paravertebral soft tissue mass
-May contain fat attenuation - heterogenous
-Usually multiple and bilateral
-Calcification; extremely rare
